On 3 April 2019, the Australian Government specified the COVID-19 pandemic an Australian Government endorsed event effectively opening applications for eligible applicants under the Subclass 408 Temporary Activity Visa.
Visa Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for this visa specify that you must:
Have a temporary visa which has either ceased within 28 days, or will cease within 28 days of the time of application,
Have no other visa options and be unable to depart Australia due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Remain in Australia to assist in critical sectors including healthcare, disability and aged care, childcare and agriculture during the COVID-19 pandemic
Have adequate arrangements for health insurance during your stay,
Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirements, and
Have adequate means of support during your stay.

There are no sponsorship requirements specified for the visa.
Visa Term
The visa term relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and may vary, depending on circumstances. A period of 12 months would be appear reasonable given current circumstances.
Apply From
Applications can be made either in or out of Australia, however you must be in Australia at time of grant. Noting the current travel restrictions, we would expect that most applications for this visa will be made within Australia.
